Junction City / Geary Co.

The county seat of Geary County, Junction City, is located between the Smoky Hill and Republican rivers where they merge to form the Kansas River. In 1853 Fort Riley, a major U.S. Army post, was established on the northeast side of this confluence. Nestled in the Heart of the Kansas Flint Hills, Junction City/Geary County is one of the fastest growing communities in Kansas.

In 1854 Andrew J. Mead of New York and of the Cincinnati-Manhattan Company, Free Staters, connected to the Massachusetts Emigrant Aid Company, planned a community where Junction City now is located called Manhattan. There was also some discussion about calling it New Cincinnati, but when the steamship Hartford, delivering the immigrants, could not reach the community because of low water on the Kansas River, the Free Staters settled 20 miles east in what today is Manhattan, Kansas.

The community further west that would eventually become known as Junction City, was renamed Millard City for Captain Millard of the Hartford on October 3, 1855. It was briefly renamed again, Humboldt, in 1857 by local farmers and then renamed once again later that year to Junction City. Early on, the community demonstrated a remarkable capacity to accept and absorb new-comers and is proud of the diversity of its citizenry.

Today visitors to the area can tour Custer House on Fort Riley, visit the Buffalo Soldier Memorial, visit a one-room schoolhouse, cabin and historic church at the Spring Valley Historic Site, tour the U.S. Cavalry Museum and the 1st Infantry Division Museum at historic Fort Riley and see the evolution of the community at the Geary County Historical Society Museum.

Junction City, named by Outdoor Life as one of the top 200 towns to live in for anglers and hunters, offers many opportunities for outdoor activities. Milford Lake - the Fishing Capitol and largest lake in Kansas is located four miles from Junction City. The lake offers outstanding fishing opportunities, camping, off-road vehicle recreational area, sandy swimming beaches, dedicated horse camping, picnic areas jet-ski beach, marinas, cabins, State Park and plenty of room to boat.
